Rocky Mountain Futures : An Ecological Perspective
Published in Hardcover by Island Press (September, 2002)
Author: Jill S. Baron
Average review score:

A sober and comprehensive survey
Capably edited by Jill S. Baron (Ecosystem Ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory at Colorado State University, Fort Collins), and enhanced with an informative four-page Foreword by Paul R. Ehrlich (Bing Professor of Population Studies and President of the Center for Conservation Biology, Department of Biological Science, Stanford University), Rocky Mountain Futures: An Ecological Perspective is a sober and comprehensive survey of the tremendous impact human influence has had on the Rocky Mountain ecosystems. Featuring case studies, cascading effects, human-driven changes and more, this seminal and authoritative compilation of researched essays by educated authors paints an accurate and documented picture of an ecology being pushed beyond its limits, and then offers succinct, practical, and occasionally inspired ideas on what to do about it before it's too late. Rocky Mountain Futures is an essential, fundamentally critical addition to any personal, professional, governmental, organizational, academic, or community library Environmental Studies reference collection and supplemental reading list.

The Rocky Mountain Journals of William Marshall Anderson: The West in 1834
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1987)
Authors: William Marshall Anderson, Eleanor T. Harris, and Dale Lowell Morgan
Average review score:

Significant of the fur trade era
Anderson's journal, diary and narrative are an insightful look into his personal experiences, observations and thoughts during the fur trade year of 1834. Describing the multitude of people, places and events along the soon to be Oregon Trail , I can see why many historians reference his book for this time period. In typical Dale Morgan fashion, the editing is extremely well done, meticulously picking his way mile by mile with Anderson. Also included is the "Galaxy of Mountain Men" which are short but pertinent biographies of forty five men who influenced and helped shape the fur trade and western expansion movement.

Rocky Mountain National Park
Published in Paperback by University Press of Colorado (January, 1984)
Authors: Curt W. Buchnoltz and Curt W. Buchholtz
Average review score:

Negotiating the Uses of a Vacation Paradise
A thorough history, well written and spiced with anecdotes, this book shows the surpising rapidity with which the settlers in the area adapted to its greater value as a tourist mecca than as a ranching or mining prospect. It then dramatizes how the Park Service learned to negotiate the competing claims of wilderness lovers, water needs of ranchers, and vehicle visitors to provide an acceptable experience for all the varied lovers of the Rockies.

Rocky Mountain Railroad: Rio Grande Southern 1
Published in Unknown Binding by Richard Dorman Publications (April, 2000)
Average review score:

A rare set of color RGS photos
Dorman's first softcover book on the RGS, this is another set of wonderful photos published in a
large format, and the difference this time out is that most of them are in color. Color photos of the
RGS are kinda rare, except those from several railfan trips late in it's life which have been published
elsewhere.

The color photos in this book are mostly from the last decade of the RGS. There's also a number
of earlier black & white photos. There is some text, and a number of interesting newspaper quotes
from the period (complements of W. George Cook).

A good book, and a must-have for any RGS fan.

Average review score:

Rocky Mountain Snowflakes by Debra Bangert Bonzek
A great book to interact with children. It is such fun to cut a snowflake that has such unique patterns in them and they all have six points like snowflakes, not one of them is square. I can't wait to try the second book.

Rocky Mountain Tree Finder a Manual for Identifying Rocky Mountain Trees
Published in Paperback by Nature Study Guild (June, 2003)
Author: Tom Watts
Average review score:

Great, practical, tiny and easy to use
This is a great little pocket guide to the native trees in the intermountain west. It uses a key system that asks you simple questions about the shape or size of different parts of the tree, and finally leads you to the species. It's great for someone like me with no experience.

Rocky Mountains (Smithsonian Natural History Series)

comments from the author
I wrote this book because I love the Rockies, and I wanted more people to know about their geologic history, climate, vegetation, and wildlife. The Rockies preserve some of the last, best patches of undisturbed wilderness in North America. They provide an oasis of cool, moist climate, flanked by prairies on the east, and by deserts on the west. As such, they provide refuge for thousands of species of plants and animals that are adapted to cool climates. The wildlife of the Rockies has to be tough to survive the long, cold winters, but at the same time the Rocky Mountain ecosystems can be incredibly fragile. My aim is to inform you about the wonders of the Rockies, in hopes that you will catch some of my enthusiasm. So whether you are an avid hiker/camper/outdoor enthusiast, or an 'armchair traveller,' I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The Rough Guide Rocky Mountains (Rough Guides)
Published in Paperback by Rough Guides (11 April, 2002)
Authors: Alf Anderson, Christian Williams, Cameron Wilson, and Rough Guides
Average review score:

Great book!
I've lived in Denver for 5 years and still learnt a lot from this book. Great info for Front-Range dwellers. I've also used it for trips over to Utah and Yellowstone. I've used Rough Guides since 1989 for trips through Europe and the Middle East. They are the best and I was very happy to find that they'd produced a guide to my own back yard. Enjoy!

Route Across the Rocky Mountains
Published in Paperback by Purdue University (October, 2000)
Authors: Overton Johnson, William H. Winter, Angela Firkus, and David M. Hovde
Average review score:

Engaging
While reading this book one can easily see why Overton Johnson and William Winter's personal narratives of the 1843 Great Migration to the Pacific is heavily cited in Oregon Trail literature. With wonderful descriptions of day to day activities, adventures and people experienced along the trail, there are also superb first-hand accounts of climate, landforms, agricultural and economical possibilities in Oregon and California. The chapter "Instructions to Emigrants" acted as a guide for future overlanders by explaining provisions, modes of transportation, clothing, firearms, character of Indians, etc., including a general estimate of mileage between campsites with available (or not available) wood, grass and water. This is a very readable, enjoyable and historical record of early pioneers traversing the continent. Excellent!
